Branding the Brand
Much of what popular singers and artists do while at work is to promote their brand and sell their music. So, they tend to promote and encourage current stereotypes and trends regarding gender, sexuality, social class, drug use, and even race.

Sometimes artists later regret how they have showed stereotypes in their music, such as when Snoop Dogg expressed regret for how he had shown women in his music for years.8 Sometimes singers and artists put their personal views in their music and their brand. Sometimes this can be a good thing, such as when Miley Cyrus brought a homeless man as her date to the MTV awards and used her award speech as an opportunity to discuss homelessness in the United States(5) or when Akon started his project to help bring electricity to Africa.14 Other times, this can be controversial, such as when Kid Rock tweeted about his support for President-elect Donald Trump,6 when Lady Gaga protested Donald Trump’s win of the election,7 and even when Snoop Dogg called Caitlyn Jenner a science project.9 ♪ ♫ ♪ |
